Walking through the Yorkshire Dales

The Yorkshire Dales are a fantastic blend of spectacular landscapes, outstanding heritage, outdoor activities and endless ways to enjoy a memorable holiday.

The Yorkshire Dales are a walker’s paradise. There is everything from a gentle stroll along the riverbank, to a hike across the moors, to a heritage trail or a guided walk. Get out there and start walking!

Set in a stunning location on the edge of the Chevin Forest above the market town of Otley, the Chevin Hotel nestles in 49 acres of mature protected silver birch forest woodland. With reputedly the largest log cabin in the UK as the main building, the hotel comprises of a complex of beautifully quaint log buildings, a Spa health club and the main building, housing a beautiful wedding venue, market leading conference suites and the award winning Lakeside Restaurant. This beautifully-styled hunting lodge represents the ideal venue to get away from it all.

Day 1: Wecome to England!

Arrival at UK Airport, the nearest being Leeds/Bradford and Manchester. Drive to your Hotel.

Day 2: The Moors and the Sea

The North York Moors National Park

Today we recommend to explore the North York Moors National Park, one of the finest landscapes in Britain. The walk from Low Mills around Farndale offers spectacular views and takes about 6,5 hours (14 miles/22,5 km).

The Cleveland Way from Helmsley to Rievaulx Abbey is the perfect short distance walk for people who are interested in history. (6 miles/3 hours).

Rievaulx Abbey was founded by St Bernard of Clairvaux in 1132 and became one of England’s wealthiest monasteries before its dissolution by King Henry VIII in 1538.

Visit Goathland, surrounded by beautiful scenery and a village that has been used as a setting in many TV programmes and films. Goathland station was transformed into "Hogsmeade" station for the film "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone".

On your way back you have the opportunity to visit the historic village of Robin Hood's Bay, the largest holiday resort on the Yorkshire coast Scarborough or Flamborough Head, one of the most spectacular areas of chalk cliffs in Britain.

The sea of Flamborough is the resting place of many ships, none more famous than the Bonhomme Richard, flagship of John Paul Jones, which was sunk after the first action of the fledgling United States Navy in September 1779.

Bempton Cliffs RSPB reserve has the largest concentration of breeding seabirds on the English mainland, just 4 miles north of Flamborough Head.

Day 3: Ready to Ramble

Walking through the Yorkshire Dales

Take a walk through the fantastic Yorkshire Dales National Park and enjoy the outstanding scenery, the range of wildlife habitats and the rich cultural heritage. The name 'Dales' comes from the Scandinavian 'Thal' and refers to valleys in the area made by boggy by rivers flowing down from the Pennine Hills.

The Yorkshire Dales are a region of charming rural villages, pastureland and meadows surrounded by high fells and moors. These are interspersed with stone barns, dry stone walls, caves, potholes, waterfalls and stunning limestone scenery centred around three peaks, which are probably the finest in Britain. The North York Moors provide the largest expanse of heather upland in England on its vast open moorland.

The walk from Grassington takes you through another very impressive landscape (9,6 miles/15 km - 4 hours). Take time to explore the picturesque market towns and villages in the Yorkshire Dales.

Day 4: Nature and relaxation

Yorkshire Dales und Harrogate

This walk from Austwick takes you to the Norber erratic boulders, well known to geologists. These are immense boulders of Silurian rock, perched on small outcrops of limestone which were once carried to their current sites by a glacier (6 miles/10 km - 2,5 hours).

In the afternoon you will visit the victorian spa town Harrogate, well-known for its award-winning gardens, famous for its tea shops, flower shows, turkish baths and antique shops. Enjoy and relax at the fabulous 'Bettys Tea Room' with its rare and exclusive coffees and fine teas. Garden lovers can immerse themselves in floral heaven at the Royal Horticultural Society Garden Harlow Carr, themed to reflect the trends of gardening in the past 200 years.
