Abteieröffnung
Torre Abbey wird im Juli 2008 nach drei Jahren Restauration wiedereröffnet. Es ist das älteste noch erhalten gebliebene Kloster an der Torbay und in Devon und Cornwall. Sein Umbau dauerte drei Jahre und kostete 9,5 Millionen Euro. Die Grundsteinlegung für das Kloster geht auf das Jahr 1196 zurück. Die einstigen Baumeister hatten schon damals einen Blick für die Landschaft, denn man genießt von hier einen grandiosen Ausblick auf Küste und Meer. Die weitläufige Gartenanlage des Klosters ist sehenswert. Zum ersten Mal werden auch die mittelalterlichen unterirdischen Gebäude zugänglich sein. Hierhin gelangt man durch den Speisesaal, in dem einst weißgekleidete Klosterbrüder ihr Mahl zu sich nahmen. Nach Wiedereröffnung wird die Abtei Kunstgalerie, Museum und historisches Gebäude zugleich sein. Das Bauwerk besteht aus 122 Räumen, die sich über insgesamt 20 Ebenen verteilen. Übrigens Torre Abbey bietet auch Gruselfaktor: einen hauseigenen Geist soll es hier schon seit 800 Jahren geben.
