Kelvingrove in top 15 most visited museums in the world - The Herald
Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum is in the top 15 most visited museums in the world, it was revealed yesterday. Kelvingrove was visited 2,232,475 times in the last calendar year and the attraction's performance is well ahead of other national names such as the National Portrait Gallery and Tate Britain. Figures compiled by the respected arts journal The Art Newspaper, in a global survey of museums and galleries, saw Kelvingrove at 14th in the world just behind the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg and ahead of such famous names as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Uffizi in Florence and the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. The survey said that the performance of Kelvingrove since its reopening was one of the most "impressive" in the world of museums and galleries. Kelvingrove, which is free to enter, also has higher figures than Scotland's other leading attractions with Edinburgh Castle recording 1.2m visitors while the national galleries welcomed 937,770 and the National Museum of Scotland attracted 841,849 patrons. Bailie Liz Cameron, Chair of Culture & Sport Glasgow and Vice-Chair of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, said: "Where else could you explore the wonders of Ancient Egypt, enjoy the treasures of Dali and Rembrandt and see a Spitfire hanging from the ceiling but in Kelvingrove."
